Dehiwala zoo

My new tour is Dehiwala zoo.National Zoological Gardens of Sri Lanka is a zoological garden in Dehiwala, Sri Lanka, founded in 1936. Its sprawling areas are host to a variety of animals and birds. The moment you enter you really are in another world. In two foot steps you leave Dehiwala's dismal, dusty concrete and enter a 25 acre oasis thoroughly shaded by beautiful mature trees. There are the sounds; mainly bird calls and monkey howls but also big cat growls and other assorted animal utterances in such abundance that even a life time of the Discovery Channel wont allow you to identify them all. The sites; from just inside the entrance gate you'll see the ostriches pecking at the dirt, the little herd of zebras that always seem spooked by their proximity to big cat alley and, my personal favorite, the seals sliding along the smooth tiles by their pool. Finally of course there are the smells- much, much improved from the days when they were enough to put you off sighting the place, but still 300 species of animals their food, their waste, and their visitors is never going to smell like Coco Chanel's boudoir.
